From Pre-Kindergarten through to Grade 1, children are taught by their class teacher, supported by a teaching assistant. Much of their learning is through play and practical activities and is designed to inspire the children, to foster curiosity, inquiry and reflection. In keeping with the principles of the IBPYP there is also a strong emphasis on trans-disciplinary learning – allowing students to make links across the curriculum and to discover their own interests in an atmosphere which encourages independence, personal responsibility and care for others.
During their time in the First School, students develop skills in Reading, Writing and Mathematics alongside Science, History, Geography, Social Studies, Art and Design, ICT, Music, Drama and Physical and Health Education. Students in KG2 and Grade 1 also have Arabic lessons introduced. From KG1, students in the First School are encouraged to undertake a small amount of homework each evening in order to help develop their abilities in Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
