Extra-Curricular

HomeExtra-Curricular

Being an NLCS student is about much more than lessons; it incorporates an abundance of exciting opportunities and activities through which our students thrive. Our ambition is to offer a rich and vibrant extra-curricular provision across music, drama, sports, the creative arts, service and beyond. Local and international trips, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and learning outside of the classroom all enable students to challenge themselves, broaden their perspectives, and also serve to foster a greater understanding of the local culture of the UAE. Throughout the year, highlights of our calendar include large-scale theatrical productions, concerts, art exhibitions and festivals, sports competitions and games

In the Senior School there are over 100 extra-curricular activities on offer, taking place for all grade levels groups at lunchtime and after school. Most of the clubs are non-chargeable and led by our own teachers. The rest are run by specialist providers, and include opportunities such as Trinity Drama and music exams, golf, sailing, scuba diving or tennis. The exciting array of clubs and activities means there is something for everyone, from MUN to coding and from drama to visual art.

Senior students are given the opportunity to take a lead role in creating and organising clubs and societies. The ‘Senior Societies’ programme currently has over fifteen student led academic societies. They are encouraged to take ownership of their society and invite guest speakers into the school for lectures and workshops, in addition to running their own events in special ‘subject weeks’.

Another key feature of school life are the weekly ‘Nicholson Lectures’, during which teachers and Sixth form students give academic lectures on a topic related to their subject but completely unrelated to the syllabus. This reflects the School’s ethos of teaching beyond any given syllabus or curriculum and of never teaching ‘to the test’, and promotes an atmosphere of scholarship and subject passion. So far, we have seen lectures on topics such as ‘How do we learn to speak?’ and ‘A history of the operatic voice’.

Sporting activities are in abundance at NLCS Dubai. Sports offered on campus include: athletics track and field, aquathon, basketball, badminton, cricket, dance, football, netball, rounders and swimming. These sports operate at both recreational and advanced levels and our squads are competing in DASSA Junior and Senior leagues as well as regular friendly matches against other schools in Dubai.

Music, Art and Drama facilities include a suite of specialist music practice rooms, a recording studio, specialist Art classrooms, a Mac suite, a black box drama studio and our superb Performing Arts Centre, which plays host to frequent concerts, productions and House Competitions. Students have the opportunity to take private music and drama lessons in addition to regular class lessons.

The Senior School timetable operates before-school, at lunch time and after School, typically 4-5pm.
