The Nicholson Lecture Series

senior school science

NLCS Dubai is to launch the Nicholson Lecture Series, for parents and for students seeking admission to the world’s leading universities. Set to become a regular feature on the NLCS calendar, each event will have a different theme and will be delivered for parents and students to enjoy: either for their own interest or to support their aspirations for university.

The inaugural event, STEM Careers and Enrichment, will take place at Intersect by Lexus, DIFC, on Monday 30 January 2017, featuring academic lectures by senior NLCS (UK) teaching staff:

‘Powerful Maths using small numbers’ by Mr Laurie Winston, Acting Head of Maths, NLCS (UK)

‘Serendipity and Rationale in Scientific Research’ by Dr Amanda Welford, Teacher of Chemistry and Acting IB Diploma Coordinator, NLCS (UK)

The Nicholson Lecture Series was established at NLCS (UK) as part of the School’s commitment to promoting an atmosphere of scholarship and subject-passion. Along with the numerous academics, writers and politicians who come to speak at the School, each week, a teacher will give an academic lecture on a topic related to their subject but completely unrelated to the syllabus. This reflects the School’s ethos of teaching far beyond any given syllabus or curriculum and of never teaching ‘to the test’. Students applying to top universities have found this further academic enrichment invaluable and the lectures have certainly contributed to the fact that over 40% of students go on to study at Oxford, Cambridge and Ivy League universities.
