History Trip to Italy

Wednesday May 23, 2018

During the school holidays in March, 15 students from Grades 8 to 10 travelled to Italy to undertake an investigation into the History, Culture and Art of the Italian Renaissance. The focus of the trip was for students to be introduced to this vibrant period of history and for them to have an insight into how these Italian City States led the way in developing many aspects of modern culture.

The students first travelled to Venice where they worked with Dr Martino Rizzi of the Ca Foscari University. During their time in Venice they spent time exploring the Doge’s Palace and the urban spaces around the Piazza St Marco, along with the lesser-known parts of Venice. A highlight for the students was a day they spent out on the Venetian lagoon, exploring many of the islands of Venice, such as Murano, Burano and Torcello.

From Venice, the students travelled to the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence. The students had a hectic time visiting many of the key attractions of the city and some less well-known places, such as the first foundling hospital in Europe, the Hospital of the Innocents. Their time in Florence was finished with a hilltop walk to the old church of San Miniato where, to the sounds of Gregorian chants from the Monks, the students watched the sun set over Florence.

Finally, the students spent an evening in a 13th century castle in the foothills of the Tuscan Apennines. Here the students learnt about the feudal history of the region and the castle in which they were staying. They undertook a cooking course and feasted in the dining room of the Castello. It was a great way to finish the trip.

This tour provided the students with an insight into the Renaissance period, with all students keen to return to Italy to continue their education.
