Lots of Literature
This half term saw the annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature here in Dubai, and with some careful planning this coincided with our own literature week and book week. Students in all grades were able to explore the magic of reading and stories with all the First and Junior School classroom doors decorated with wonderful depictions of front covers.
Our collaboration with the EAFOL this year was extensive. We hosted a number of authors at NLCS Dubai such as Dr Jane Hawking and Professor Martin Puchner, and our students were able to attend lectures from Professor Peter Frankopan, Mr Jasper Fforde, Mr Mark Huckerby and Dr Nick Ostler. To be able to meet and question such eminent writers has inspired many of our students to write themselves.
One of the ways in which students can start to get their work in print is by submitting articles for our growing number of in-house publications. We now have magazines being published in Geography, Arabic and Modern Foreign Languages and of course we have our own school magazine: Oasis and the magazine that is published across all three NLCS Schools: Global. Remaining with the theme of outstanding writers, our drama students performed in the first NLCS Dubai Shakespeare Festival. Monologues, excerpts and a reinterpretation of the Bard’s work made for a very entertaining evening.
