Let’s start at the beginning
Term 3 kicked off with the return of our Senior School students from overseas trips to Nepal and Europe. The Nepal trip was two-fold in its aims as a cultural introduction to this fascinating country but also for the students to carry out a project as part of their ‘Service as Action’ in the MYP and ‘Creativity, Activity and Service’ work for the IB Diploma. This experience saw the students rolling-up-their-sleeves to build biogas chambers for local families – allowing them to use agricultural waste for daily fuel needs. Apart from the economic benefits to the villagers, this also reduces the need for the deforestation of local tiger and rhino habitats. But it wasn’t all work and no play, with plenty of time for immersing themselves in the local culture, and even some white-water rafting.
Meanwhile another group of students was soaking-up the culture in Europe with a trip to Barcelona in northern Spain and then Montpellier in southern France. They had a wonderful immersive adventure, experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes of the two neighbouring countries – developing students’ cultural understanding of the way of life in these countries while practising both languages. Highlights? Paella, flamenco, history, architecture, crêpes, football, tapas and more!
